To qualify for Mensa membership, an applicant must score at or above the 98th percentile on the Mensa IQ test or another Mensa-approved IQ test. This means that Mensa members are among the top 2 percent of people who take standard IQ tests.

Mensa International was founded by Roland Berrill and Lancelot Lionel Ware in Oxford, England in 1946. American Mensa was founded in Brooklyn, New York in 1960. As of 2015, there are more than 120,000 worldwide Mensa members. The average age of Mensa members is between 20 and 60.
