The average length of recovery from a sprained ankle depends on the severity of the sprain, but can last from two weeks to a few months, explains Veritas Health. The recovery process consists of three phases.
The first phase of recovery takes approximately one week and involves reducing swelling, resting and protecting the ankle, according to Veritas Health. The second phase of recovery, which averages from one to two weeks, includes restoring flexibility, strength and range of motion. The final stage of recovery, which can take weeks to months, includes performing maintenance exercises that require turning or twisting the ankle without pain.
