The average rate of data entry in the United States is approximately 8,000 keystrokes per hour, or KPH. This is considered the average 10-key speed.

Many potential employers require a minimum KPH from applicants. This minimum requirement should not be confused with the average. Accuracy in data entry is as important as speed. Test takers are often penalized 10 KPH per hour for every error. Thus, it is better for a test taker to backspace and correct mistakes as he makes them, rather than race forward to finish as quickly as possible. The relationship between data entry and carpal tunnel syndrome has been the subject of much study, giving rise to ergonomics and behavior change measures.
