The average annual salary for civil engineers per May 2014 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data was $87,130, but 10 percent made at or below $52,570, while the top 10 percent earned $128,110 or more per year. Alaska was the top-paying state, with an annual average salary of $107,600.
In the top employment sector, architectural, engineering and related services, the average annual pay was $88,710. In state government roles, civil engineers averaged $80,040 per year. Local governments paid $86,540, while nonresidential building construction paid $81,300. Though a relatively low employment sector, oil-and-gas extraction provided the highest average pay for civil engineers at $126,830.
