The California Condor is the largest land bird in North America, with an average wingspan of 9.5 feet and a weight of 23 pounds. It is an extremely rare bird.
Condors use their wingspan to allow them to soar and glide at 50 mph. They can fly up to 150 miles per day in search of food.
Adult condors, both male and female, are primarily black with a white triangle under each wing and a bald head. Young condors have feathers on their head that fall out as they mature. The adults' bald head is more hygienic, allowing them to feed on animal carcasses without carrying trace remains.
