What is an azalea pot?

Azalea pots, designed to accommodate horizontally spreading root growth, are wider and shallower than standard pots. Azaleas grown in standard pots suffer from stunted growth and root rot because the roots, which do not spread vertically, become constricted while unused soil at the bottom remains soggy.
The Encore Azalea company recommends selecting pots that measure at least 2 feet in diameter at the base with adequate bottom drainage. It is also necessary to choose a location that has good drainage or to place the pot on bricks to prevent soggy soil in the container. Azalea pots are made from clay, ceramic, plastic or fiberglass.
