What is the gumpo azalea?

A gumpo azalea, also known as Rhododendron Gumpo, is a small-sized azalea with pink, red or white blooms. The gumpo azalea blooms later than typical azaleas. The gumpo azalea blooms in late May and June, instead of the traditional spring.

It grows to 2 feet high and 3 feet in width, again smaller than traditional azaleas. Originating in China, the gumpo azalea has been in the United States since the 1900s.

They are not as hardy as some azalea varieties and are most suitable for growth in USDA Hardiness Zones of 7 and southward. However, northern parts of Arkansas are able to grow and maintain the gumpo azalea.
