An infant ape is called a baby. Babies typically nurse from their mothers throughout the first four to five years of life, depending on the particular type of ape.
When they no longer nurse, young apes are considered to be juveniles and continue to stay with their mothers for several more years. Much like humans, apes are not considered to be adults until they reach 15 to 18 years of age.
According to the Center for Great Apes, there are two species of apes: great apes and lesser apes. The great apes include gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans and bonobos. The lesser apes include gibbons and siamangs.
