What are baby dolphins called?

Baby dolphins are called calves. Female dolphins are called cows, and males are called bulls. A mother dolphin forms a strong bond with its calf, and a dolphin calf usually stays with its mother for three to six years.

Dolphin calves are usually born tail-first after a gestation period of 12 months. A calf can swim from birth and is immediately guided to the surface by its mother to take its first breath. Dolphins are mammals and nourish their young with milk. To accomplish this underwater, baby dolphins roll their tongue into a straw-like shape to latch on to their mother's nipple. Dolphin calves are born with whiskers on their upper jaw. These whiskers fall out immediately after birth.
