Baby jaguars are called cubs. Cubs live with their mothers for the first two years of their lives. They are taught how to survive and then leave the mother to live on their own.
Jaguar cubs are born small and helpless, weighing only 1.5 to 2 pounds with both their eyes and their ears sealed shut. Within a couple of weeks, their eyes and ears open, and they can see and hear. For the first year of their lives, the mother feeds and defends her cubs, and during their second year, she shows them how to hunt. After jaguars leave their mothers, they live very solitary lives and carve out their own territories.
