How do you go back to school?

To go back to school, decide on a major, determine your schedule, and aim for a targeted graduation date and preferred learning environment. Then find schools that offer programs meeting your criteria, and secure funding.
- Determine your availability
If you have a job, going back to school on a part-time basis may be a viable option. If your schedule permits, you might consider returning to school full time.
- Determine your educational objective
Decide what degree you want to earn and when you would like to complete it.
- Determine your learning environment
Given your availability and objective, determine whether an online or traditional classroom learning environment suits you best. The online format gives you more control over your schedule but potentially less support. The traditional brick-and-mortar classroom setting requires you to be present at a particular time and location.
- Research your options
Find out which schools offer the degree you intend to earn. List the pros and cons of each of your options.
- Apply to two to four schools
Narrow your options down to the best opportunities. Fill out the applications for the schools you like most.
- Secure funding
Give some thought to funding your education, and find out if your employer contributes anything towards your education. If you need financial aid, fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, which is found on the U.S. Department for Education's website.
