According to Airsoft Dome, it is possible to safely spray paint an airsoft gun, but gun owners must check with their local governments about the legality of changing the gun's appearance. The U.S. Government Printing Office says most airsoft guns in the United States can be legally painted by owners.

To safely spray paint an airsoft gun, the owner needs to cover the gun's vulnerable areas before painting, says the Airsoft Dome Team. The gun's barrel needs to be plugged and covered, as should the magazine and any other sections of the gun that have holes leading to the internal mechanics.
