Banks provide free checkbook registers for new accounts, and many provide additional registers free of charge to existing account holders at branch locations. Additionally, when depositors place an order for a new set of checks, banks typically include a free register.

Paper checkbook registers are for more than just checks. When used properly, they provide a real-time record of every transaction, including checks or online debit card purchases that can take 24 hours or more to post to an account. Failing to keep a real-time register can result in an account ending up with a negative balance, causing overdraft fees, bounced checks and declined debit card transactions.
