Where are Barbie dolls manufactured?

As of 2014, Mattel manufactures Barbie dolls at two factories in China, one factory in Indonesia and one factory in Malaysia. The debut doll released in 1959 was produced in Japan, with a number of other countries following as manufacturers, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Korea and Mexico.

While the US-based manufacturer has based its main operations in China for decades, the dolls were not introduced to that country's market until 2009, when a violin-playing doll tailored to the Chinese culture hit the shelves. To date, the Barbie doll is available in at least 150 countries around the world.
