A bargaining unit position is a position that is represented by a labor union. Bargaining unit employees are allowed to negotiate the hours they work, how much money they make and other conditions of their employment.
When a union represents bargaining employees, they can get together to negotiate a contract for employment. Included in those negotiations are mandatory subjects like hours, wages and conditions of employment. Also included in the negotiations are things like health and safety, discipline procedures, the right to strike and the length of the contract. Once everyone has agreed on the terms of the contract, the employees put that contract to a vote.
