Garter stitch, Stockinette stitch, basic ribbing and seed stitch are some basic knitting techniques. The most basic technique is the Garter stitch which can be achieved by knitting every row. The fabric created through this technique is flat and reversible, and it does not roll at the edges.

The Stockinette stitch technique produces a fabric that has a much smoother appearance and a tendency to curl at the edges. The basic ribbing technique produces a fabric that has the ability to stretch. Hence, such fabric is used in making hems, necks and cuffs of most sweaters. The seed stitch technique produces a textured fabric through a sequence of knit and purl stitches.
