What are bath salts?

Bath salts are typically made of a mixture of Epsom salt, baking soda and essential oils. The key ingredient, Epsom salt, is a naturally occurring pure mineral compound that breaks down into magnesium and sulfate. When absorbed into the skin, bath salts can help relax muscles and loosen stiff joints.
Plain Epsom salts can be purchased at the drugstore. For a detoxifying bath, add one to two cups of Epsom salt to very warm water, let dissolve and soak for at least 12 minutes. Do not use Epsom salts in case of pregnancy, dehydration or open sores.
Dead Sea salts, a blend of minerals found only in the Dead Sea in Israel, are another form of bath salts. This variety is commonly used to treat psoriasis.
