What do bats look like?

Bats are brown, red, tan, grey or black and range in size from 2 1/2 to 7 inches long. A bat's wingspan ranges from 8 to 23 inches. Bats possess large ears that allow them to easily detect prey and predators.

The structure of a bat's wings resembles that of a human hand, consisting of flexible bones set between flaps of skin. There are over 1,000 bat species in the world and 40 known species in the United States. Bats hunt for food at night and consume a varied diet of insects, fruit, nectar, lizards, frogs, birds and small mammals.
