What are leotards?

A leotard is a skin tight, one-piece garment that covers the body but not the legs. There are short-sleeved, long-sleeved and sleeveless leotards. Leotards only cover the torso, and they are commonly worn by figure skaters, gymnasts and dancers.

Typically, leotards do not have snaps at the crotch like bodysuits and are therefore entered through the neck. A unitard, which is a variation of the leotard, covers the legs. Leotards are unisex and were made famous in the mid 1800s by French acrobat Jules Leotard.

Leotards are used for a variety of purposes, including pajamas, exercise outfits and casual outfits. They are also commonly used as children's play outfits.
