What is sherpa fabric?

Sherpa, a heavyweight fabric most often used to line coats and other outerwear, has a dense pile and a fluffy texture reminiscent of wool. While most commercially available sherpa fabrics are a synthetic blend of acrylic and polyester, cotton versions also exist.

Due to its softness, density and heat retention, sherpa fabric is often used as a cruelty-free alternative to fur or suede linings in outerwear. Its thick, woolly pile also makes it a popular choice for hats and other winter accessories, as well as plush toys. The name comes from the fabric's resemblance to the rough wool with which the Sherpa people of Nepal line their clothing.
