How do you become an LPN?

To become an LPN, graduate from high school or obtain a GED, choose a nursing program offered by an accredited school, get accepted into the program, and complete the program. Upon graduation, apply for a license from the state in which you want to work, and pass the test.

Obtain a high school diploma or GED. Schools make this a requirement for acceptance into most nursing programs.
- Choose a nursing program
Choose a school that offers an acceptable program, and apply for admission. Ensure the program is one accepted by the state in which you want to practice.
- Get accepted to the program
Get accepted into the program by meeting the school's requirements. These requirements can vary but often include a clean background check and the ability to provide at least one professional reference.
- Complete the program
Finish the program, and meet all supervised clinical practice requirements.
- Apply for a license
Upon completion of the program, apply for a license from the state in which you intend to work. The State Board of Nursing issues test times and dates.
- Pass the state test
Take the state test at the scheduled test time, and answer enough questions correctly to score a passing grade.
