As of 2014, the first step to becoming a mechanic is to complete a certificate or degree program at an automotive school. Next, gain on-the-job experience, and finally meet certification and licensing requirements.
- Prepare yourself to become a mechanic
Familiarize yourself with different automotive parts and how they work to make getting through school easier. Work on your communication skills, because customer relations are an important part of being a mechanic.
- Acquire a certificate or degree
Enroll for a short-term certificate program. Alternatively, apply for a special associate’s degree program at an auto-mechanic school. A sound educational background improves your chances of becoming a mechanic.
- Gain work experience
Apply for an entry-level trainee position at an automotive company. You need two to five years of on-the-job training to become a fully-qualified service technician or senior mechanic.
- Meet certification and licensing requirements
Get certified through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence by passing an exam. Some areas of specialization include manual drive train and axles, heating and air-conditioning, as well as automotive transmission and other niche mechanical fields.
- Advance in your career
Continue with your education and training to advance in your career. Stay up-to-date with advances in the automotive industry. Maintain good practices to retain your certification.
