How do you become Muslim?

To become Muslim, observe the Five Pillars of Islam. Start by bearing witness, thus converting to Islam. Pray five times a day, fast during the month of Ramadan, give to charity, and make the pilgrimage to Mecca, if possible.

1. Convert to Islam

   Testify before two witnesses that there is no god except Allah and that Mohammad is Allah's messenger. It is preferable to witness in Arabic, so state the following, "La ilaha illallah Muhammad-ur-Rasulullah."

2. Pray five times a day

   Perform an ablution, cleansing your face, arms and feet with fresh water. Lay a prayer rug so that you are facing Mecca. State your intention to pray, raise your hands to your ears, and state that God is great, "Allahu Akbar." Lower your hands, recite your prayer, bow, then prostrate yourself. Your forehead should touch the rug, and your hands should be next to your head. Sit, state that God is great, and prostrate yourself again. Return to standing. Repeat this procedure twice during the five daily prayers.

3. Fast during Ramadan

   Fast from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan, which is on the Islamic lunar calendar.

4. Give to charity

   Give a minimum of 2.5 percent of your surplus income to charity every year.

5. Make the pilgrimage to Mecca

   Perform the Hajj, which is the pilgrimage to Mecca. Aim to do this at least once in your lifetime.
