How do you become a real estate agent in New York?

To become a real estate agent in New York, complete an accredited 75-hour real estate salesperson training program and pass a state licensing examination. Upon passing the exam, submit documentation and license fees to the New York State Division of Licensing Services.
- Complete a training program
Locate an accredited real estate salesperson training program. Programs are offered at community colleges, universities, vocational schools or via distance training. The 75-hour training program covers a range of topics, such as legal issues, contracts and insurance. Review the New York State Occupational Licensing Management System for approved programs.
- Register for the exam
Register for the examination by creating an account with eAccessNY. Once created, click Apply to Take an Exam. Be prepared to provide contact and training information along with selecting an examination date.
- Take the examination
Arrive at the exam site with a valid government-issued identification card. Test takers are given 1 1/2 hours to finish the multiple-choice examination. To pass, you must score a minimum of 70 percent.
- Obtain real estate salesperson license
Upon passing the exam, access your eAccessNY account. On the main menu, select Apply for Initial Salesperson License. Be prepared to provide the sponsoring real estate broker license number, training program information and payment for license fees. Upon successful review, a license is sent to the sponsoring brokerage firm.
