In the film "A Simple Twist of Fate," Steve Martin plays Michael McCann, a man who retreats to rural Virginia to build furniture, after learning his wife was unfaithful. After an orphaned toddler wanders into his house, he decides to adopt her and must fight for custody.

"A Simple Twist of Fate" is an American comedy drama film. It was released on Sept. 2, 1994 and was directed by Gillies MacKinnon. Steve Martin, the lead actor, also wrote the screenplay, which was based on the 1861 novel by George Elliot, "Silas Marner." The film also stars Laura Linney and Gabriel Byrne.
