Depending on state licensing requirements, school psychologists must earn an educational specialist degree, doctoral degree or a master's degree in school psychology to administer help and guidance to minors. After fulfilling all educational requirements, school psychologists must pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology to earn a license.
- Earn a bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
Complete a bachelor's degree program in psychology, English, sociology, biology or other discipline to gain acceptance into a specialist, doctoral or master's degree program. Students with previous coursework in psychology may advance faster than those who study an unrelated discipline.
- Earn a specialist, doctoral or master's degree
Complete coursework in an advanced degree program to qualify for a psychology license. Educational specialist degrees require at least 60 graduate level semester hours. This degree program also require students to complete a 1,200-hour internship. Doctoral and master's degree programs in school psychology include training in both education and psychology.
- Apply for a psychology license
Contact the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Licensing Boards to determine specific state licensing requirements. Continued education may be necessary to maintain a license. After receiving a license, create a resume that includes educational and work experiences to apply for open positions in public and private schools.
