How do you become a zoologist?

Aspiring zoologists must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in zoology, wildlife or a related subject, such as ecology. Higher-level zoologists need at least a master's degree, and a doctorate is required for most zoologist research jobs.

Zoologists who want to research at the PhD level must be familiar with statistical software and computer programming. Zoologists at all levels must be versed in computer science because zoologist positions often require the use of geographic information systems, modeling or other advanced software.

Outdoor experience, such as swimming in frigid waters, driving a tractor, and living independently in rural areas, are helpful for some zoologist positions.
