How do you become an audiologist?

Audiologists must earn a doctoral degree in audiology and pass a state exam to treat patients. Additional certifications by the American Board of Audiology or the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association may help an audiologist gain employment or advance in his career.

1. Earn a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

   Complete a bachelor's degree program in any field to gain acceptance into an audiology doctoral program. Students may benefit from completing coursework in biology, anatomy or physics prior to starting this doctoral program.

2. Earn a doctorate in audiology from an accredited college or university

   Complete a four-year doctoral degree program. Coursework may include medical ethics, genetics, pharmacology, physiology and diagnosis and treatment. Students may also have to complete an internship or participate in a cooperative program to gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating patients.

3. Earn a state audiologist license

   Pass state licensing exams to earn an audiologist license. Contact state medical licensing boards to determine exact licensing requirements as these requirements vary by state. For example, some states may require a criminal background check or additional exams.

4. Apply for audiologist positions

   Create a professional resume that highlights educational and work experience as well as any additional certifications, and submit applications for audiologist positions.
