It takes eight years of school and an additional four years in a residency program to become a radiologist, equating to a minimum of 12 years total. A residency can extend to six years to ensure the optimal performance.
According to information from the American Board of Radiology, a radiologist is a licensed physician who is trained to diagnose and treat injuries and diseases using imaging technology such as x-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs and nuclear medicine. The American Board of Radiology also lists many areas of specialization for radiologists, including pediatric radiology, nuclear radiology, radiation oncology, medical physics, and hospice and palliative medicine.
