Where do bedbugs originate, and do they come from the shedding of human skin?

Bed bugs are carried into a home from an outside source. They are often brought in on luggage, used furniture or anything with a soft upholstered surface. Bed bugs are attracted to carbon dioxide, and not dead skin cells.

Because bed bugs are attracted to carbon dioxide, their presence is not a reflection of the cleanliness of a home. The best way to reduce their numbers is to vacuum daily, wash linens frequently and move the bed away from the walls and any other furniture. To prevent bringing bed bugs into the home, avoid placing suitcases on the floor or bed of hotel rooms, wash and place clothes in a hot dryer when returning from a trip and inspect any furniture before bringing it into the house.
