Is Bell's palsy contagious?

Cordingley, M.D., Ph.D. Although the exact cause of Bell's palsy is unknown as of 2015, there is a link between the condition and exposure to certain viruses, including herpes simplex, herpes zoster, rubella, Epstein-Barr, mumps virus and influenza B, states Mayo Clinic.

Bell's palsy results in weakness or paralysis of facial muscles on one side of the face, states Dr. Cordingley. It affects both genders equally and can strike at any age. Even without treatment, Bell's palsy is temporary in most cases, with 50 percent of all patients achieving a full recovery within six months. In rare cases, Bell's palsy can recur.
