Belted kingfishers mostly eat fish, although their diet also includes crayfish, insects and salamanders, among other small animals. Belted kingfishers live near areas that contain water, such as lakes, rivers and marshes. The belted kingfisher features a white underbelly, a blue back and a large, sharp bill.

The prominent crest is an identifying feature of this bird. Females have a chestnut-colored band on their lower abdomens, differentiating them from males. The kingfisher hunts by diving into the water to seize its prey. Once it does, it flies back to its perch where it swallows the prey whole. What the kingfisher cannot digest, it regurgitates as a pellet.
