Evidence of okra’s use as a means for controlling blood sugar in diabetics is nonexistent, since the only studies performed as of 2015 are on laboratory rodents, notes Healthline. However, these studies show promise, and more research may yield a definitive answer about the effectiveness of okra in diabetes management.

An ISRN Pharmaceutics study in 2011 observed rats that were fed a solution of water used for soaking sliced okra pods, notes Healthline. The solution reduced glucose absorption and blood sugar levels. Similarly, the Journal of Pharmacy & Bioallied Science published a study on diabetic rats that were fed okra peel extract and powdered okra seed. After four weeks, the rats’ blood sugar levels were significantly reduced, and there was a return to normal in the rats’ triglyceride levels.

Even in the absence of any research regarding the effectiveness of okra in controlling human diabetes, okra remains a healthy vegetable, notes Healthline. It is a good source of fiber, which can reduce the risk of heart disease while easing digestion. It is low on the glycemic index, and it is a good source of antioxidants. Studies suggest that it may help lower cholesterol by interfering with the body’s cholesterol absorption.
