The Bernese mountain dog sheds year round and most heavily in the spring and fall. Bernese mountain dog owners are encouraged to brush their dog's coat several times each week in order to reduce the amount of hair found around the house. Bathing is recommended every couple of months.
Bernese mountain dogs, sometimes referred to as Bernese cattle dogs, weigh between 70 and 115 pounds and can be more than 2 feet tall at the shoulder. This breed has a lifespan between 6 and 8 years on average. The Bernese mountain dog, native to Switzerland, was initially bred to herd cattle and be a watchdog.
