Crimes targeted as part of problem-solving policing include drug use and trafficking, vandalism and violent crime, according to the Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy. Other crimes addressed by problem solving policing include property crimes and disorderly conduct.
Problem-solving policing, or problem oriented policing, represents a shift in thinking about how law enforcement responds to crime. It focuses less on reactive and incident-driven policing, and more on proactively identifying the underlying roots of crime, explains the Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy. The methodology relies on four components: scanning, to identify and prioritize potential problems; analysis, to examine the problems and develop responses; response, to implement interventions to solve the problems; and assessment, to determine whether the response was effective.
