What is involved in repairing a kitchen sink drainage problem?

Most kitchen sink drainage problems are caused by a clog in the line, and repairing the issue is usually a matter of plunging, cleaning or snaking the line. Clogs can occur in the disposer, P-trap, trap arm or further down the line.

Follow these steps belowto attempt to clear a clogged line.

1. Inspect the disposer

Before attempting to unclog a sink, first inspect the garbage disposer to determine if the issue is localized. Turn off and unplug the disposer, and then use an Allen wrench to manually turn the blades to try and clear the blockage. Plug the unit back in, ensure the breaker has not tripped and press the reset button. If this does not solve the issue, tighten the dishwasher drain line and proceed to the next step.

2. Plunge

Use a plunger in the side of the sink with the blockage and plunge vigorously.

3. Remove the P-trap

If plunging does not solve the issue, put a bucket under the trap anddisassemble and remove the P-trap. Toss large debris and thoroughly clean out the trap.

4. Remove the trap arm

After cleaning out the P-trap, remove the trap arm that is attached to the wall.

5. Snake the pipe

After removing the pipes, use a plumber's snake to clear the rest of the line.

6. Reassemble

Reassemble the system. If a clog still persists, consult a professional plumber.
