What is beryllium nitrate?

Beryllium nitrate, also called beryllium dinitrate, is the ionic beryllium salt of the nitric acid HNO3. Its molecular formula is Be(NO3)2, and its molecular weight is 133.021982.

Like all beryllium-containing chemical compounds, beryllium nitrate is toxic. It irritates the throat when inhaled in small doses, while the inhalation of a larger amount may cause acute pneumonitis. It causes the skin and eyes to become red from irritation. The substance itself is not combustible; however, it produces toxic fumes when it comes in contact with a flame. It is also toxic to the environment, especially to aquatic organisms, and care should be taken to ensure its safe storage in a well-closed container.
