Beryllium was discovered in 1798 by scientist Abbé Haüy. Until its discovery in 1798, it was assumed that emeralds and beryl were composed of different substances.
Although beryllium was discovered in 1798, scientists did not have the means to produce pure beryllium until much later. In 1828, scientists Friedrich Wölhler and A. Bussy successfully made the first pure sample of beryllium by reducing beryllium chloride. Today, beryllium has a wide array of uses, especially when combined with other metals. Beryllium and nickel can be combined into an alloy that is extremely durable and often used in the production of springs.
