Are betta fish poisonous to eat?

While the betta fish does not have any naturally occurring toxins in its body, it is still inadvisable to eat one. Parasites or bacteria from the fish or its surrounding waters can cause serious illness if ingested.
The betta fish originated in Southeast Asia and is known for its bright colors and aggressive demeanor. They are primarily carnivores, and they eat insects, zooplankton and small crustaceans. People in Thailand have collected betta fish since the 19th century. In 1840, the king of Siam began collecting and licensing these fish for participation in betta sparring matches and then distributed betta fish internationally.
