Is it better to apply for SSI online or in person?

As of 2015, Supplemental Security Insurance applicants are required to apply for benefits in person; there is no online application. Applicants should call 800-772-1213 to make an appointment with a local office to fill out an application. Deaf or hard-of-hearing applicants can call 800-325-0778.

Those applying for children under age 18 must fill out an application in person and complete the Child Disability Report online. Adult application information entered into the Apply Online for Disability Benefits page at the SSI website can be used when completing an application. After an applicant submits information in this way, an SSI representative contacts the applicant to request additional information for the application.
