How big is a double bed?

The dimensions of double beds are 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. They are commonly known as full-size beds and can be special-ordered in an extra-long size.

Double beds were used for two adults 30 to 40 years ago when homes and bedrooms were built much smaller. As of 2014, people usually opt for a queen- or king-size bed for two adults to share. Double beds are more commonly used in smaller guest rooms as the fit is tight for two adults. In fact, double beds have the same length as twin beds, and two adults sleeping on a double bed each have only about 27 inches of sleep space, or the equivalent of space of a crib mattress.
