Humpback whales range between 48 and 62.5 feet in length and can weigh up to 40 tons. As baleen whales, humpbacks' consume krill, plankton and small fish. The complex vocalizations of humpbacks are called songs and can last for hours, but the purpose of these sounds is unclear.
Humpback whales live in all of the oceans of the world but most typically reside in coastal waters. They migrate up to 16,000 miles a year. Humpbacks spend their summers in polar waters to feed, while in winter months they travel to tropical or sub-tropical waters to breed. Humpbacks are not social whales although they do occasionally spend short amounts of time together in small groups before disbanding.
