Rhode Island's official nickname is the Ocean State. It has 384 miles of shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay, and about 14 percent of the total area is made up of bays and inlets. The state borders Connecticut to the west and Massachusetts to the north and east. It also shares a water border with New York. As of 2014, Rhode Island is the second most densely populated state with 1,006 people per square mile.
