Yorkshire terriers or "Yorkies" usually weigh from 4 to 7 pounds. Yorkies smaller than 4 pounds are often called teacup Yorkies and have a higher risk of health issues than normal-sized Yorkies.

Yorkshire terriers were originally developed in northern England for hunting rats and mice in clothing mills and mine shafts. The modern breed is a miniature version of its ancestors and is now a companion dog. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1885.

Yorkies are known for their long silky coats, blue-and-tan coloration and spunky spirit. They are excellent dogs for small homes but need daily exercise and human interaction.
