Which is bigger: the earth or the sun?

By every measure of size and mass, the Sun is much larger than the Earth. The Sun has a diameter of nearly 1.4 million kilometers and a mass 330,000 times that of the Earth. The Sun represents over 99 percent of all the mass in the solar system.

The Earth has a diameter of slightly less than 8,000 miles. A line drawn across the Sun would have to be almost exactly 175 times longer than the equivalent line through the Earth. The Sun has sufficient volume to contain over 1 million Earths, and many solar prominences, such as large flares, are themselves far larger than the Earth.
