The largest cities in France, based on population estimates for 2012, are Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse and Nice. The populations of all major French cities have grown steadily at each census taken since 1975.

When considering the greater metropolitan areas of the cities, the order of the largest cities in France does not change. It does raise the total population count. Within the city limits of Paris there were approximately 2.2 million people in a 2013 count. The greater Paris metro area claims a population of more than 12 million in the same count. Taking greater metro areas into account, Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse all have populations in excess of 1 million.
