"Field & Stream" says the 468-pound sturgeon caught by Joey Pallotta III is the biggest landed using a rod and reel. Some controversy surrounds the world record for biggest sturgeon, however, and other publications have reported larger catches.
Pallotta landed his record catch in Benicia, California, in 1983. It reportedly took him five hours to capture the fish. In 2012, the "Daily Mail" published a photograph of a sturgeon weighing 1,100 pounds. Michael and Margaret Dell, a couple from England, nabbed that fish in the Fraser River during a trip to British Columbia. The 12-foot sturgeon may be the largest fish ever caught in North America.
