In a bimonthly pay period, the employer pays the employee twice per month. This will fall on set days within the month, such as the 15th and 30th.
Biweekly pay periods, or when an employee is paid every 2 weeks, often sounds the same as bimonthly, but there are differences. There are more biweekly pay periods in a year, which means the overall check amount will be slightly less. It also produces some challenges for human resources departments who manage the benefits for the employee. These benefits are charged to the organization on a monthly basis, which requires some special math to determine how much should be allocated for biweekly pay periods.
