The prophet Muhammad founded Islam in or near the city of Mecca, which is located in present-day Saudi Arabia. Traditions state this took place in 610 A.D.
One night when Muhammad was meditating, he was allegedly visited by an angel called Jibreel. The angel revealed to Muhammad words that came from God. Muhammad was shown more revelations throughout the remainder of his life, and he collected them in the Holy Qu'ran. This serves as the primary scripture for Muslims, who follow the teachings of Islam. Muslims hold that these words are the complete revelation of God and that previous prophets only had access to partial truth.
