Bitly is an Internet URL shortening service founded in 2008 that allows users to shorten long web addresses into a format small enough to use easily on tweets, blogs and in SMS messages. Bitly also allows users to save a list of their shortened URLs for later use.
Bitly first became popular on Twitter, where users are limited to 140 characters per single post. Bitly also offers a branding service to other companies, allowing those companies to create and use a custom micro-URL when users shorten a link from their original web address. Other services provided by Bitly include website search features, bookmark tools and public user profiles.
